quoted from Confucius, Analects BkIII sect.23. translated by Soothill. The section begins: "the Master discoursing to the state Bandmaster of Lu on the Subject of music said: "The art of music may be readily understood. The attack … etc." " Ezra Pound's rendering: "One can understand this music: a rousing start in unison, then the parts follow pure, clear one from another, (brilliant) explicit to the conclusion". This text may be used as a variant rite.
